Scala Dei Prior

Scala Dei Prior

The expression of Priorat’s wines: the gateway to the Priorat, a photograph of the DO, tells us that it is a red wine of aging for two reasons, it elaborated with the four most cultivated varieties in the region, and it is grown under two of the most common soils: slate and clay.

Its grapes come from historic varieties of the area and from the oldest vineyards (which are between 35 and 65 years old), planted in terraces and in typical coastal of llicorella, in Priorat. The orography and, above all, the desire to obtain the best grapes, requires that it is manually harvested. The vineyards are located between 400 and 600 meters high, which favours a slow and regular maturation so as to ensure a variety of nuances thanks to de combination of the heights and the different directions of the vineyards. All of this makes of this wine a unique and highly representative one from Priorat.

After defining the vineyards that are envisioned for this wine, the grapes are previously selected on the estates and, when they arrive at the cellar in small boxes of 17 kg, all the grapes are carefully checked by the cellar staff as they go through the vibration selection table, installed at the entrance of the cellar. After deciding on its crumbling and treading, we proceed with its fermentation at a thoroughly controlled temperature to conserve its aromas. Local yeasts are used to enhance the typicity of the vines that are part of it. Subsequently, the aging takes place in 100% French oak barrels for one year. This aging is completed in the bottle.

Sensory features

It is clean and bright. Its colour goes from an intense ruby and a high layer with maroon and brown tones on the rivet. Its aromas are intense and persistent, reminding us of red and black fruits, strawberries, wood, blackberries, floral nuances of violets, all paired with subtle spicy hints and toasted notes. It is a wine with a strong body, defined by its fineness, it is then silky in the mouth and with ripe and elegant tannins that are complemented with the mineral aromas as a result of the llicorella soil, and balsamic notes due to the clay one.
